John Murphy
John Murphy was a news director at WHJB radio in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, who became a key investigator and documentarian of the 1965 Kecksburg UFO Crash. Murphy's attempts to produce an honest documentary about the incident led to heavy censorship, witness intimidation, and his own tragic death shortly after the event.

Investigation of the Kecksburg Crash
On the evening of December 9, 1965, Murphy received a phone call at WHJB from a distressed mother who reported witnessing a fiery object fall into the woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, with blue smoke rising from the impact point. As a veteran news director experienced with distinguishing credible reports from pranks, Murphy judged the caller sincere and immediately drove to the scene to investigate.
Murphy arrived at the woods and spent considerable time investigating before state police and military personnel arrived. State Police Fire Marshal Carl Mets entered the woods with another investigator and, upon returning, told Murphy cryptically: "You better get your information from the Army." At the state police barracks in Greensburg, Murphy observed Army and Air Force personnel swarming the building — an unprecedented sight that convinced him something of major military significance had been found.
"Object in the Woods" Documentary
Murphy proceeded to interview numerous Kecksburg-area witnesses about what they had seen and experienced. He began producing a radio documentary titled "Object in the Woods" based on these interviews and his own investigation. However, the documentary was never aired in its original form.
According to Murphy's wife and other WHJB employees, Murphy was approached by unidentified men at the radio station, leading to radical alterations to the program. The version that ultimately aired included:
- A defensive disclaimer stating: "This station has not been contacted by any official agency of the state federal or local government. We have received very good cooperation with the state police and with the military and we were able to receive all the information we wanted. This past week we have not had any political or otherwise influence put on us concerning this program whatsoever."
- Testimony from witnesses who withdrew their accounts, with Murphy stating on air: "Yesterday afternoon a woman from Gettysburg area recorded for us what she saw... Late this afternoon she notified this radio station that she was afraid of getting into trouble and she did not want her description of the object used on the air."
- References to other witnesses who refused to go public due to fear of reprisals from the U.S. Army or State Police
Researcher Stan Gordon later received notarized documents from WHJB station employees claiming that U.S. government elements confiscated news tapes of eyewitness accounts and prevented them from being broadcast.
Witness to the Object
In 2003, Murphy's wife revealed that he had privately told her he entered the woods on December 9, 1965, and witnessed a strange metallic object on the ground. Murphy never made this claim publicly before his death, likely due to the intense pressure and intimidation surrounding the case.
Tragic Death
John Murphy died in a hit-and-run incident shortly after the Kecksburg event. The circumstances of his death have fueled speculation among researchers, though no evidence has emerged definitively linking it to his investigation of the crash.
Legacy
Murphy's censored documentary and his widow's revelation that he witnessed the object firsthand make him a crucial figure in the Kecksburg case. His experience exemplifies the Media Censorship of UAP Events and Witness Suppression that characterized the official response to the incident.
