Harold Dahl

Harold Dahl is the central witness in the Maury Island Incident of June 27, 1947, widely cited as the origin point of the Men in Black archetype in modern UFO lore. While conducting conservation work on Puget Sound near the eastern shore of Maury Island, Washington, Dahl reported observing six donut-shaped craft hovering approximately half a mile above his boat. Debris fell from one of the craft, killing his dog and injuring his son. Dahl photographed and filmed the objects.

The Encounter

The six craft, described as donut-shaped with dark outer surfaces like a doughnut mold, hovered in formation before one appeared to emit or jettison metallic-looking debris onto Dahl's boat. The debris reportedly included two types of material: a lightweight whitish foam-like substance and heavier dark metallic fragments. Dahl photographed the incident and reported it to his superior, Fred Crisman.

The Man in Black Visit

The following morning — June 28, 1947 — Dahl was approached by an unknown man in a black suit who suggested they have breakfast at a nearby diner. There, the man recounted the details of Dahl's encounter the previous day with extraordinary accuracy, despite Dahl not having publicly disclosed it. The man then told Dahl:

"What I have said to you is proof to you that I know a great deal more about this experience of yours than you will want to believe."

The man warned Dahl that if he spoke of the incident, bad things would happen to himself and his family. This exchange is regarded as the prototype of the Men in Black phenomenon — suited strangers with inexplicable foreknowledge who intimidate UFO witnesses into silence.

Credibility and Disputes

The Maury Island Incident is among the most hotly contested in UFO history. Shortly after, two Army Air Forces investigators flew to Seattle to retrieve the debris samples — their B-25 crashed on the return flight, killing both. Some researchers have treated this as suspicious; others point out that the B-25 was already having mechanical problems. Critics have questioned elements of Dahl's account, and some have characterized the incident as a hoax. The incident nevertheless entered UFO history as the founding narrative of the Men in Black phenomenon.
