Gerald Ford

Gerald R. Ford served as a Republican congressman from Michigan before becoming the 38th President of the United States (1974–1977). In the context of UAP history, Ford is notable for arranging the first closed congressional hearing on UFOs before the House Armed Services Committee on April 5, 1966 — an act for which he reported receiving significant public ridicule despite his serious intent.

Congressional UFO Hearing (1966)

Ford called for the congressional investigation partly out of dissatisfaction with the Air Force's handling of UFO reports, particularly J. Allen Hynek's dismissal of the 1966 Dexter, Michigan mass UFO sighting as "swamp gas." Ford found the explanation unconvincing and believed the public deserved a proper inquiry. He subsequently arranged the first closed session on UFOs before the House Armed Services Committee — the first time Congress had officially addressed the subject.

On the day of the hearing, Ford explicitly noted the ridicule he received for arranging it: "As I expected, some persons have ridiculed my call for a congressional investigation into unidentified flying objects." Despite Ford's efforts, the hearing produced limited results. Project Blue Book chief Hector Quintanilla testified at the session, making what Hynek later identified as factually false statements about Blue Book's radar case record.
