General Samford

Major General John A. Samford served as Director of Air Force Intelligence and is known in UAP history for holding the largest US Air Force press conference since World War II following the 1952 Washington DC UFO sightings. In July 1952 Samford and USAF Director of Operations Roger Ramey appeared before the press at the Pentagon to address the wave of UFO reports over the nation's capital.

During the press conference, Samford acknowledged that a percentage of credible observers had reported "relatively incredible things" while simultaneously attributing the majority of UFO reports "to their own satisfaction" to hoaxes, misidentified aircraft, or meteorological phenomena. Samford specifically stated that the 1952 Washington DC sightings were "in no way related to any secret development by any Department of the United States."

The nuanced position Samford articulated — acknowledging credible unknowns while officially dismissing the mass of reports — was subsequently reversed by the CIA's formation of the Robertson Panel six months later, which concluded that UFOs should be stripped of "special status" entirely and that public interest in UFOs should be actively reduced through a media management campaign.
