Operation Laser Strike Deployment
In 1997, elements of MAC G28 deployed to Peru in support of Operation Laser Strike, a classified US SOUTHCOM counter-narcotics operation. Marines from the unit served as perimeter security for radar installations and replaced aging Hawk missile batteries with Stinger MANPADS and Avenger surface-to-air missile platforms. The unit operated radar systems tracking narcotics traffic — and, according to witness testimony, anomalous aerial phenomena.
The Second Low-Altitude Air Defense Battalion within MAC G28 included Lance Corporal Jonathan Weygandt, Sergeant Allen, Sergeant Atkins, and Staff Sergeant Montil — the Marines who encountered a crashed non-human craft during the operation. MAC G28 Marines from Cherry Point did verifiably deploy to Laser Strike, a fact confirmed through Defense Technical Information Center documentation, though some details of the deployment remain classified.
