The SSCI allegedly investigated National Reconnaissance Office financials between 1992 and 1995 following declassification, during a period when UAP researchers claim the NRO played a significant role in crash retrieval and surveillance operations. Chris Mellon served as staff director of the SSCI and worked alongside Mary K. Sturdivant in that capacity, both of whom later became central figures in UAP disclosure and alleged program access efforts.

During witness testimony about UAP encounters, SSCI members reportedly asked witnesses to arrange for fellow Marines to provide anonymous testimony about related incidents, indicating the committee's active interest in gathering firsthand accounts of military UAP encounters.
