The Mexican Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Mexicana) filmed 11 unidentified flying objects on March 5, 2004, over the southern state of Campeche. The objects were captured using infrared equipment during a routine anti-drug trafficking vigilance mission. The lights appeared to fly at altitudes of 3,500 meters and surrounded the jet as it conducted its patrol. Major Magdaleno Castanon stated that the military jets "chased the lights" and that he believed "they could feel we were pursuing them."

Only three of the eleven objects showed up on the plane's radar. Skeptic Michael Shermer suggested the lights were burnoff flares on an offshore oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, though this prosaic explanation has not been conclusively confirmed.
