Counter-Narcotics Operations in Peru

During the 1990s, SOUTHCOM conducted multiple classified counter-narcotics operations in Peru and Colombia, including:

  • Operation Laser Strike (1996–1997) — A major aerial counter-narcotics operation employing radar systems and up to 20 US agencies to interdict drug trafficking aircraft in Peruvian airspace
  • Operation Green Clover (1996) — A smaller-scale predecessor to Laser Strike
  • Authorized up to 14 special forces deployments to Peru during 1997

SOUTHCOM assets in the region during this period included the US Army 7th Special Forces Group, Joint Task Force Bravo (with the 1st Battalion 228th Aviation Regiment), and the MARFORLAND Riverine Training Team stationed at Iquitos, Peru. US Army South began supporting counter-drug operations in the region in 1995 by providing aircraft including UH-60A Black Hawks.

Relevance to UAP Research

SOUTHCOM's operational infrastructure in Peru during the mid-1990s is central to theoretical reconstruction of the 1997 Peru UFO Crash Incident. The command's assets — radar installations, special forces, and aviation units — provided both the detection capability and the logistical framework within which a DOE NEST rapid recovery team could have operated.
