American Institute Of Aeronautics And Astronautics

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is the world's largest professional society devoted to aerospace and defense, founded in 1963. In UAP history, the AIAA is notable for issuing an official statement in 1970 agreeing with the Condon Report's conclusion that "little of value had been uncovered by scientific UFO studies" — an endorsement that contributed to the institutionalization of the UFO Stigma within aerospace and engineering communities.

1970 Official Statement on UFOs

In 1970, one year after the Condon Committee published its report recommending the termination of official UFO investigations, the AIAA issued an official statement agreeing with the report's findings. The AIAA's position aligned with those of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, creating a unified front of major American scientific and engineering institutions dismissing UFO research as lacking scientific merit.

The AIAA's endorsement was particularly significant given its membership base of aerospace engineers, researchers, and military professionals — the very community most likely to encounter anomalous aerial phenomena in the course of their work.
