Malmstrom Air Force Base

Malmstrom Air Force Base is a US Air Force installation located near Great Falls, Montana. It is a Strategic Air Command (SAC) base historically responsible for maintaining a large portion of the US intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) deterrent force, specifically the Minuteman missile fleet. In UAP research, Malmstrom is best known as the site of the Malmstrom Air Force Base UFO Incident of March 24, 1967, in which a pulsating red oval craft hovered over the base's front gate while all 10 on-site Minuteman ICBMs simultaneously lost their guidance and control systems.

Role as an ICBM Installation

Malmstrom hosts multiple missile squadrons responsible for underground launch control facilities and associated silo complexes distributed across a large geographic area in central Montana. As a Strategic Air Command base during the Cold War, the nuclear readiness of its missile complement was critical to US deterrence posture. The base hosted the 490th Minuteman Missile Squadron, to which Robert Salas was assigned in 1967.

The 1967 UFO Incident

On the night of March 24, 1967, Lieutenant Robert Salas, serving as on-duty launch commander at an underground facility assigned to Malmstrom, received reports from his flight security controller of a craft performing anomalous maneuvers. The craft — a glowing red oval approximately 30–40 feet in diameter — was subsequently reported hovering directly over the base's front gate. During this period, all 10 Minuteman missiles under Salas's control showed simultaneous red fault status, indicating guidance and control system failure.

The event was classified Secret by Air Force security intelligence. Four personnel later submitted sworn affidavits attesting to the event: Salas, First Lieutenant Robert C. Jameson, Airman First Class Patrick McDonah, and Dwin C. Arneson. No Air Force investigation produced a conventional explanation for the simultaneous missile failures.

Significance

Malmstrom represents the most formally corroborated instance of UFO interaction with an operational nuclear missile installation. The simultaneous shutdown of 10 ICBMs at a single facility, occurring during the documented presence of an unidentified craft, is the defining case in the UFO Interference with Nuclear Weapons pattern. David Grusch directly confirmed the Malmstrom incident in his NewsNation interview with Ross Coulthart.
