ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile)

An intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is a long-range ballistic missile designed to deliver nuclear warheads at intercontinental distances — typically defined as ranges exceeding 5,500 kilometers (3,400 miles). ICBMs follow a ballistic trajectory through space, separating warheads from boosters at high altitude before re-entry. During the Cold War, ICBMs formed the land-based leg of the US nuclear triad alongside submarine-launched ballistic missiles and strategic bombers. Multiple documented UAP incidents involve UFOs interacting with ICBMs during test flights or disabling them at their silo installations.

Design and Deployment

Cold War US ICBMs included the Minuteman series (Minuteman I, II, III) deployed in hardened underground silos across Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Missouri. The Minuteman missile was the primary ICBM system at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, during the Malmstrom Air Force Base UFO Incident of 1967. ICBMs tested from Vandenberg Air Force Base during the 1960s were used to evaluate warhead design, re-entry vehicle performance, and countermeasures including chaff decoys.

UAP Interactions

Two formally documented incidents involve direct UFO interaction with US ICBM systems:

1964 Vandenberg Test Launch — A dummy ICBM warhead filmed by Lieutenant Robert Jacobs from Vandenberg Air Force Base was intercepted at the fringe of space by a disc-shaped craft that fired four directed energy beams at the warhead, causing it to fall off-trajectory. The film was confiscated by government agents. See: Vandenberg Air Force Base UFO Film Incident.

1967 Malmstrom Minuteman Shutdown — All 10 Minuteman ICBMs assigned to a launch control facility at Malmstrom simultaneously lost guidance and control function while a UFO hovered over the base's front gate. Lieutenant Robert Salas and three other personnel submitted sworn affidavits. See: Malmstrom Air Force Base UFO Incident.

Both cases are central to the UFO Interference with Nuclear Weapons and UFO-Nuclear Connection discussions in UAP research.
