NAMRU South, Lima, Peru
NAMRU South (Naval Medical Research Unit South), also referenced as NAMRU-6, is a US Navy biomedical research facility located in Lima, Peru. It operates under the Navy Medical Research Command and conducts research on infectious diseases and related biodefense applications relevant to the US Navy and Marine Corps. In UAP research, it appears in connection with the 1997 Jonathan Weygandt encounter in northern Peru as a theorized post-exposure quarantine and holding location.
Operational Context
NAMRU South is one of a network of Naval Medical Research Units stationed globally. Its Lima location serves as the South American hub for US Navy biomedical research activities in the region. At the time of the 1997 Peru UAP crash retrieval, NAMRU South was one of three significant US military installations in the greater Iquitos-Lima corridor, alongside USAF Detachment 5, Ikitos and the MARFORLAND Riverine Training Team.
Connection to the 1997 Peru UAP Incident
Lance Corporal Jonathan Weygandt testified to encountering a large egg-shaped craft embedded in a granite cliff face in the Peruvian jungle during Operation Laser Strike in 1997, approximately 90 miles from Ikitos, Peru. Following the encounter and his exposure to an unknown viscous purplish-green liquid dripping from the craft, Weygandt underwent what he described as a period of isolation and sequestration lasting approximately three weeks, during which he was unable to contact fellow Marines.
UAP Gerb theorizes that NAMRU South in Lima was a likely location for this holding period and for any biological analysis of materials Weygandt may have come into contact with. The Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) — the DOE rapid-response unit whose personnel were observed at the crash site in MOPP gear — would have required specialized medical infrastructure to manage potential contamination cases. NAMRU South, as the nearest US Navy biomedical research facility with appropriate containment capabilities, fits the operational profile for this function.
This remains a theory rather than documented fact; no official records confirming Weygandt's presence at NAMRU South have been released.
