Indian Springs Air Force Base
Indian Springs Air Force Base is a military installation located in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada, approximately 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Now known as Creech Air Force Base, it sits in close proximity to the Nevada Proving Ground where Operation Upshot-Knothole nuclear tests were conducted in 1953.
In Arthur Stansel Jr.'s account of the 1953 Kingman, Arizona Crash Retrieval, Indian Springs served as the initial assembly point for the 16 Atomic Energy Commission specialists recruited to investigate the downed craft. At Indian Springs, Stansel and the other personnel surrendered their personal valuables to military police before being transported by aircraft to Phoenix, Arizona, and subsequently by blacked-out bus to the crash site.
