Pori Airport UFO Incident

The Pori Airport UFO Incident of April 12, 1969, is the only UFO observation officially acknowledged by the Finnish Air Force in its history. During a Fouga Magister jet training mission at Pori Airport in Finland, Finnish Defense Force flight controllers directed pilots Tarmo Tukia and Juhani Korhonen to investigate seven assumed air balloons floating at 1,500 to 3,000 meters altitude above the airport.

Date1969-04-12

Pilot Observations

Upon approach, Tukia reported that the objects were not balloons but disc-shaped, slightly round "like balls with no extremities," and pale yellow in color. These objects accelerated away from him at great speed against a headwind of 180 km/h as he tried to approach. Korhonen, the second pilot, independently observed the objects as well, confirming the anomalous shape and speed.

Radar Corroboration

While Pori Airport did not record sonar signatures (airports typically use radar, not sonar), radar detection 200 km away in the town of Vaasa detected the seven objects after they had rapidly accelerated away from Tukia. The radar tracking created an estimated speed of 3,218 meters per second — far exceeding any known aircraft capabilities of the era.

The combination of multiple pilot eyewitnesses and independent radar corroboration from a distant location made this incident sufficiently credible for official acknowledgment by the Finnish Air Force.
