The Incident
A group of children playing football in a public park in Voronezh observed a pink glowing object in the sky. The object transformed into a deep red ball approximately 3 meters (10 feet) in diameter. The sphere circled the football pitch, vanished, and then reappeared, hovering at low altitude.
From the craft, witnesses reported the emergence of a tall humanoid entity — approximately 3 meters (10 feet) in height — wearing bronze-colored boots and bearing a disc-shaped object on its chest. Witnesses described the entity's head as abnormally flattened or "smushed" directly onto its shoulders with no visible neck. The entity was accompanied by a robot-like figure.
According to witness accounts, the entity produced a device that fired a beam at a 16-year-old boy, causing him to temporarily disappear. After a period, the boy reappeared. The entity and robot then returned to the craft, which departed.
A local police sergeant, Sergey Matveyev (name approximated), separately reported observing a "flying body in the sky" around the same time as the children's encounter.
Official Response
The Soviet Scientific Commission ordered an official inquiry into the incident. Investigators examined the alleged landing site but found no concrete physical evidence of a craft landing. Radioactive cesium was detected in the area, though the quantity was assessed as insufficient to confirm a craft landing. Microorganism sampling and spectrochemical measurements revealed nothing abnormal.
Soviet media covered the story extensively. Observers have noted that the incident occurred during Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost reforms, which loosened press restrictions. Some have suggested this contributed to the story receiving sensationalized coverage that may have amplified unverified details.
